World Community Grid

Minnesota Girl Scouts may now contribute their idle computer time to support research to fight AIDS, cancer and other global health and environmental problems. In an effort to build community amongst our soon to be new organization and to expand the reach of technology amongst girls and volunteers, we have established the Girl Scouts of Minnesota World Community Grid Team. Here's how you can lend your computer to support this important project!

Being part of World Community Grid is simple -- and the software and your membership are free, secure, and will not affect how you use your computer! To start, you must download the software. There are currently three versions of the software available for these operating systems: Windows, Linux, and (Apple) Mac.

Here’s the link to join World Community Grid: Join Now. New information (8/3/07): World Community Grid -- Girl Scouts of MN Team.

Similar to other software downloads; World Community Grid software requires that you accept an end user license agreement. You may wish to read the Software License Agreement prior to downloading the software.

Participants of World Community Grid contribute computer time that normally would go to waste. This is the ultimate win-win situation. Your computer contributes to World Community Grid's computing power to advance projects that benefit humanity. World Community Grid provides the software that does it all for free, and you become part of a community that is helping to change the world.

Once you install the software program, you will be participating in the World Community Grid. The next step is to JOIN the GSMN Team! Yes, all Girl Scouts, volunteers and staff may contribute their computer time by joining. This will result to making a BOLD statement about our support for research on problems such as cancer and AIDS.

The software runs only when your computer is on. It will automatically start when you turn on your computer and will run when your computer is idle. The more your computer is on, the more processing happens. The software doesn't need to be connected to the Internet to work its task, but once finished; it needs to reconnect to the Internet to return data it has finished working on and to get a new task. The software operates as any other Internet application, and will send results and ask for new tasks when you are connected to the internet.

While your grid agent is crunching numbers, you and the Girl Scouts of Minnesota Team are earning points! On the Global Statistics page for the GSMN Team, you can track your participation, and watch your points accumulate both as an individual and as part of the GSMN team. Statistics are updated four times each day at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC.

Next steps: Once you are ready, go to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewJoinNow.do and select the version of the software that is correct for your computer. If your Web browser gives you the option to "Open" the file after downloading, do so. Otherwise, once the download is complete, save the file to a convenient place and double click on the file. Then, follow the install instructions. Remember, it's important to JOIN the GSMN Team!
